This course is open to native speakers of Chinese as well as those with two years college Chinese. The working language is Chinese but frequently bilingual to foster discussions about such topics as nationality, ethnicity and gender identity. The original materials are taken from novellas, narrative films and Chinese classics. These modes of communication are examined as translingual practices between languages, cultures, and traditions particular to a historical period, unique to a political discourse, or distinctive of a social class. Students will answer essay questions using their own lexicon to paraphrase and translate what they read, rooted in various discursive environments. |
