• Women’s liberation is undoubtedly a big part of Chinese modernity as far as we believe in Western feminism and social progress. In the works we have studied from the republic era to the communist era, what traditional cultural institutions have been called into questions and rejected by progressive thinker? What feminist movements fall short of their progressiveness when seen today?

• In Han Dynasty, Confucian historian Ban Zhao wrote Lessons for Women, arguing for women’s right to education. Based on her writing, can she be viewed as a feminist? Is her advice relevant to fictional women such as Zi Jun, Wei Ming, Xi’er, and Wu Qionghua? Is gender equality the end goal or only a means to an end?
